Visit to the BMT Unit

Today we went to the BMT Unit at Texas Children's. We were able to see where the transplant will take place and some of what to expect in the coming days, weeks, months, and years. This is going to be a very long process and we will take it day by day. They took some blood from Will and Walker to continue preparing for the transplant. We will be going back on 5.24 for more tests.

Ok, for the timeline. This is going to happen within the next 6 weeks. On 5.24, certain studies on Will and Walker will be done that will set in motion the clock. The BMT will take place within 30 days of these tests which will take place on 5.24. What that will mean is that Walker will have some of his bone marrow extracted and that William will receive it on what is called "day 0".

Day -9 through Day -1, William will first have a port insertion surgery then receive chemo to kill off certain cells. Then on Day -1, the day Walker donates his bone marrow. The next day ("0")William will receive the new bone marrow via his blood stream. The new cells will engraft within 2 to 4 weeks if all goes well.

As a doner, Walker will be under general anesthesia as his bone marrow is extracted from his back hip. He will be very soar for a while, but able to go home the same day.
